Assessing Twenty Years of Santa Monica Sustainable Purchasing

Frog and Coin

The City of Santa Monica has long been a pioneer in sustainable purchasing. The City’s early efforts were documented in a thorough 1998 report published by the Environmental Protection Agency’s Environmentally Preferable Purchasing Program. Titled, The City of Santa Monica’s Environmental Purchasing – A Case Study, the report was substantially researched and written by then-EPA employee, Eun-Sook Goidel.

Eun-Sook — who has long been with Full Circle, and has spent her career in environmentally preferable purchasing — was hired by Santa Monica to revisit the 1998 Case Study, undertake current research and to draw comparisons between then and now. The goal is to develop an updated document that informs the City’s current state of sustainable purchasing, and gives guidance to the City and others for paths forward.
